Ideal Weight Calculator

Estimate your ideal body weight for your height using four classic formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi — alongside the healthy weight range from BMI, so you see a realistic band rather than a single number.

How to use the ideal weight calculator

Choose your sex and units and enter your height. The calculator shows an ideal-weight range from four established formulas, the value each one gives, and the healthy weight range from BMI. Treat the band as a guide — a healthy weight is one you can maintain.

The formulas

Each is based on a base weight at 5 ft (152 cm) plus a set amount per inch above that. For a man:

Devine
50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
Robinson
52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 ft
Miller
56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 ft
Hamwi
48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 ft

Women use slightly lower base weights. Because they disagree by a few kilograms, reading the result as a range is more honest than picking one number.

Frequently asked questions

Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimate of a healthy weight for your height, originally developed to help doctors with medication dosing. Several formulas exist and give slightly different numbers, so it is best read as a range rather than a single target.
