How to calculate sales tax manually

Sales tax is a percentage added to the price. Convert the rate to a decimal and multiply, then add it on:

Tax = Price × (Rate ÷ 100)
Total = Price + Tax

Worked example. A $100 purchase at a 7.25% rate:

Tax — $100 × (7.25 ÷ 100)$7.25
Total — $100 + $7.25$107.25

To go the other way and pull tax out of a total, divide by (1 + rate). $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100.00 before tax.

How sales tax works in the U.S.

There is no national sales tax. Rates are set locally, so what you pay depends on where the sale happens. A few things worth knowing:

State + local layers
City and county taxes stack on the state rate
Combined ~0–10%
Five states with no state sales tax
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon
0% state
Tax-exempt essentials
Many states reduce or exempt groceries & medicine
Varies
Destination-based rule

Rates change over time and by jurisdiction — check your state or local tax authority for the exact current rate.
